MY PATH TO BECOMING A COUNSELLOR

Counselling was not a career I just happened to fall into. It was a lifelong calling. A vocation. It became a direction I moved toward deliberately, over many years, while building a life that kept teaching me things that I now use every day in my counselling practice.

For sixteen years I worked alongside people carrying enormous pressure - professionally, personally and physically - and I developed a deeper intuitive understanding of what people look like when they are coping and what they look like when they are not. I also learned how rarely we give ourselves permission to acknowledge the difference.

Although I loved my career and the many remarkable challenges it brought, I increasingly felt the pull towards the path I always wanted to take. But, as I have come to know, timing is a teacher and there is wisdom in learning to trust it. When I finally returned to full-time formal studies focusing on Psychology, it felt less like the beginning of a new career and more like the continuation of a journey that was set in motion a long time ago. I graduated Psychology Honours cum laude, completed my Specialist Wellness counselling training through Humanitas and have trained and worked with Lifeline Western Cape as a crisis counsellor since 2021. All of these and many other chapters have only deepened my conviction that this work matters and that being trusted with someone's most difficult moments is one of the greatest privileges I know.

WHO I WORK WITH

Today I work with people who often appear to be functioning well on the outside, while carrying heavy burdens on the inside. People who give enormously to their work, their relationships and their families, often at the cost of their own wellbeing. Women who silently bear the grief, loss and isolation of infertility. Mothers quietly navigating the complexity of their role. Professionals who have achieved a great deal and still feel like something is missing. People who are seeking change but not sure how to go about it. Couples who remember what it felt like to be close and are trying to find their way back. People who are thoughtful, self-aware and perhaps a little tired of holding it all together.

If any of this sounds familiar to you, you have come to the right place.

In my practice I have found that much of what people experience as overwhelm and anxiety is actually a very reasonable response to a world that is moving faster than any of us can comfortably process. The work is not always about fixing something broken inside. Sometimes it is simply about having somewhere safe to go - where you can put down the weight of it all and remember that you are only human.
